Jazil Takes Belmont From Behind

Jazil Wins Belmont (photo credit Adam Coglianese)

At the138th running of the Belmont Stakes on June 10th, 2006 the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained "Jazil" rallies from a last to first place victory in a field of 12 three-year-olds.

Jazil took the field by one and one-quarter lengths over the Todd Pletcher-trained duo of Bluegrass Cat and Sunriver. It was a good turnout for the crowd of just over 61,000 which fell just short of last year’s turnout when Preakness Stakes winner Afleet Alex won the Belmont Stakes before a crowd of 62,274.

Wagering for the day was compromised by heavy rainfall during the days leading up to Belmont Park’s biggest day, limiting the Belmont Stakes program to just three turf races including one race with only a four-horse field. Yet, despite the smallest field sizes over the last seven years, the final wagering numbers stacked up favorably to past Belmont Stakes days.

On-track wagering on Belmont Stakes day races, only, totaled $8,958,323 for the 13-race presentation, with an additional $556,657 from on-track simulcast wagers to bring the grand total to $9,514,980. The on-track record for a Belmont Stakes day when there was no Triple Crown on the line was $10,581,093 in 2001.

Jazil paid $14.40 to win, $6.70 to show, and $4.70 to place. Bluegrass Cat paid $6.40 to place and $4.70 to show. Sunriver paid $6.10 to show.

The Belmont Stakes 138th Running of this $1 million 1 ½-mile loop around the Belmont Main Track, will go to the post on Saturday, June 10, 2006.

It is disappointing not to see Preakness champ Bernardini and a healthy Barbaro in Saturday’s 138th running of the Belmont Stakes to finish this year's Triple Crown, but even with those two stars missing the oldest, longest and last leg of the Triple Crown it will be as competitive as could be with a big field of a dozen three-year-olds trying to go the mile and a half.

Belmont Stakes Day features a 13-race card that begins with a first race post time of noon. (Parking gates open at 8:15 AM and admission gates open at 8:30 AM) The Belmont Stakes will be the 11th race and go to post at approximately 6:35 PM. Also on the card will be the $400,000 Manhattan Handicap (Gr. 1), the $200,000 True North (Gr. 2), the $250,000 Woody Stephens Breeders' Cup (Gr. 2), the $300,000 Just A Game (Gr. 2) and the $250,000 Acorn (Gr. 1). The 13th and last race will go to post at approximately 7:50 PM.

There are many ways to wager on Belmont Stakes Day, including Win, Place, Show, Exactas and Trifectas on every race, eight Pick 3s, seven Daily Doubles, two Quinellas, three Superfectas and the Grand Slam wager. A $1 Million Guaranteed Pick 6 Pool begins on Race 6. The $1 Million Guaranteed Pick 4 begins on Race 8.

Barbaro Pulls Up; Bernardini Wins Preakness!

Bernardi wins 2006 Preakness Stakes - Photo Credit:Jim McCue/MJC

A record crowd of 118,402 sat under blue skies in mild temperatures to witness the historic 131st running of the Preakness Stakes. A total of $87,544,368 was wagered on the 13-race card, while $56,394,560 was bet on the Preakness race itself.

Javier Castellano rode the lightly raced son of A.P. Indy to victory in 1:54.65 for the 1-3/16-mile distance on the main track. Sweetnorthernsaint could not fend off the winner as they raced down the stretch but finished a game second, 5-1/4 lengths behind. Hemingway’s Key finished third. Brother Derek, second in the wagering, broke poorly, got as close as second at the half-mile marker but tired and finished fourth.

The winner, who is trained by Tom Albertrani, had won the Withers (Grade III) in just his third lifetime start. “I think he just came into his own. We just felt that he could probably compete at this level, knowing that Barbaro was the horse to beat,” Albertrani said. “This horse just blossomed and matured so much in the last couple of months that he was just beginning to get better and better.”

Barbaro, the 1-2 favorite, delayed the start when he broke through the gate and had to be restrained by jockey Edgar Prado and the Pimlico outriders. After he returned to the starting gate and after suffering a career-ending injury, the colt was vanned off the racetrack.

The Kentucky Derby winner suffered fractures above and below his right hind ankle. He was attended by Dr. Dan Dreyfuss and Dr. Nick Meittinis and vanned to the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

Bernardini paid $27.80 to win, the eighth largest win payoff in Preakness history.. He led a $171.60 exacta, a $3,912.80 triple, a $11,151.20 superfecta, a $66.20 late daily double and headed the final leg of a $446.20 pick three and a $1,620.80 pick four.

It's Time for Preakness

Can You Say Triple Crown? It's Preakness Time Baby!

After a successful Kentucky Derby on May 6th, the second jewel of the Triple Crown, The Preakness Stakes, will be taking place this weekend at Pimlico, Baltimore.

Post Position Selections; 131st Running of the Preakness Stakes

BALTIMORE, 05-17-06 --- Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was installed as the even-money favorite for Saturday’s $1 million Preakness Stakes after trainer Michael Matz selected Post Position No.  6 with the third pick during “SportsCenter At The Preakness Draw” Wednesday at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The undefeated colt, who will carry the colors of Roy and Gretchen’s Lael Stables in the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown at Pimlico Race Course, will be ridden by Edgar Prado. Brother Derek, who finished in a dead-heat for fourth in the Derby after a wide trip, was rated second at 3-1 by Pimlico Race Course’s handicapper Frank Carulli.
